There’s been some speculation about a bout lined up for Carmelo Hayes, which is being suggested as a potential stature-building opportunity for him.
As the No. 1 draft pick, Hayes was recently promoted to the SmackDown after making a name for himself in NXT. However, despite accepting challenges against Cody Rhodes and engaging in a feud with Andrade and lastly in a triple-threat match at Crown Jewel on November 2 where he was pinned by LA Knight, he has yet to create a significant impact on SmackDown.
During Friday Night SmackDown, Carmelo Hayes faced WWE Champion Cody Rhodes in a bout where Hayes fell short. Although he started strong with some slaps and a headlock, the match quickly turned when Rhodes delivered a Disaster Kick followed by a suplex from the second rope, securing the win.
Before this match, General Manager Nick Aldis had informed Hayes of a special opportunity lined up for him. It seems like an effort to elevate a young talent, build a compelling story, or develop Hayes’ character further.
Potential Hayes vs Cena matchup
Following Aldis’ announcement, excitement has sparked on social media, especially after Carmelo Hayes shared a picture of John Cena and tagged Aldis, hinting at Cena as a possible opponent in the future. Cena, a 16-time WWE Champion and one of the greatest achievers in WWE history, has already announced his retirement at the end of 2025 and WrestleMania41 would be the last WrestleMania that he would be a part of.
The possibility of a match between Cena and Hayes creates a door to an emotional storyline. Such a bout could serve as a major platform for Hayes to prove himself and showcase his ability to perform at the highest of occasions.
