One of the biggest conversations in the wrestling business right now is about John Cena’s upcoming retirement tour. Many of his former rivals as well as emerging stars have expressed interest in stepping into the ring with the icon one last time.
From CM Punk to The Miz, it looks like everyone wants a piece of the 16-time world champion before he retires. Or could it be 17? There’s certainly a story to be told there if the WWE chooses to take that route.
Another former WWE Champion, Rob Van Dam, has also expressed his desire to take on Cena. According to The Times of India, on a recent episode of his podcast, “1 Of A Kind”, RVD said:
“I hope they bring me in for a rematch with Cena, that’d be super cool.
“I know I could still do that same match. Absolutely.”
WWE Hall of Famer Wants to Face John Cena During Retirement Tour
Cena and Van Dam took part in a legendary match at ECW One Night Stand in 2006, in front of a rowdy audience, which ended with RVD capturing the WWE Championship in heroic fashion.
On the night, RVD was cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase to face Cena for the WWE Championship. There was no doubt about who the fans wanted to see win and following Edge’s interference, Van Dam became world champion.
Given the history between RVD and Cena, wrestling fans may get nostalgic about their match. But it is hard to imagine that the WWE would have any interest in making it happen at this point in time.
Van Dam has not had a match in the WWE since 2014. He is 53 years old. And while he still wrestles occasionally, and has even appeared on AEW television, it would be safe to say that he is well past his prime. Sometimes, it is better to leave the memories alone. This might be one of those occasions.
