John Cena’s time as a pro wrestler will be up soon. The 16-time world champion made a surprise appearance at WWE’s recent Money in the Bank PLE in Toronto and announced his farewell tour.
It looks like Cena will have one last run next year and he looks set to have three more matches at least, at Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and of course, the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania.
It will be sad to say goodbye to one of the all-time greats but the timing feels right. Cena has slowed down in the ring considerably since making the move to Hollywood, where he is finding a ton of success. A lot of his shine seems to be off as well, as he has constantly put younger talent over in recent years, losing the majority of his matches.
Don’t get us wrong, Cena’s last WrestleMania match will be a big deal. He is one of the all-time greats and was the face of the WWE for more than a decade. A hero and inspiration to fans around the world.
Of course, one could argue that wrestlers never retire. We saw Stone Cold Steve Austin step back into the ring after all. But considering Cena’s Hollywood commitments and his age, we might actually not see him back in the ring anytime soon if ever again once his farewell tour is over.
That raises the big question, who should be his opponent in what is probably his last match at WrestleMania? There are certainly quite a few intriguing ways that the WWE could go here.
WWE: Who should be John Cena’s opponent in his last WrestleMania match?
The obvious first choice would be Randy Orton. Their careers have been interlinked for such a long time. Not many would be opposed to one last dance between the two in what would feel like saying goodbye to an era of wrestling altogether.
CM Punk would not be a bad option either. He and Cena have incredible chemistry in the ring and have had some of the best matches in WWE history together. A heel Punk vs a babyface Cena at WrestleMania, that’s money.
Talking about in-ring chemistry, would anybody be opposed to seeing AJ Styles take on Cena one last time? Their matches in the mid-2010s were some of the best ever.
Here’s a choice out of left field. How about Cody Rhodes? It could be like the modern-day equivalent of The Rock vs Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 18. A passing of the torch. Now that works for us, brother!
Of course, there are plenty of routes the WWE could go. Let’s just hope that Cena gets one last hurrah instead of the Kurt Angle treatment.
